In the Netherlands, a law on Professions in the Individual Health Care Sector (BIG wet = Beroepen in de Individuele Gezondheidszorg) was adopted in November 1993. It authorizes in principle anyone to practice medicine. However, the law lists reserved acts, that is to say which can only be carried out by authorized practitioners. In addition, the law combines the freedom of medical practice with a criminal provision: harming the health of an individual is punishable by punishment.
